I’ve been sitting on this story for a while, and then I forgot about it. Oops!
This movie is very VERY sexy! It won the Scientific Merit Award at the Imagine Science Film Festival for 2009, and the visuals are just stunning! Behold the awesome power of MAGNET!

That is very cool! I seem to have seen something similar once before. But… don’t magnetic field lines need to start and stop on a north and south pole? Magnetic fields can’t have a divergence, in vector calculus speak. Most were loops, but some were just “sprays” of field lines. So that makes me wonder just how scientifically accurate the visualization is.
Hmm… like so many things in physics, I’m not sure about magnets! But what you say sounds right. There’s always a toss up between science and style, maybe they picked style in some of the scenes.
